ASBESTOS AND PAH SURVEY IN BITUMINOUS PAVEMENTS
NextRoad carries out asbestos and PAH surveys in asphalt pavements prior to construction works. This service identifies the presence of hazardous substances in road surfaces and other transport infrastructures.
Compliant with current regulations and the NF X46-102 standard, this service helps secure work operations, protect workers, and guide the management of waste generated by construction activities.
Why carry out an asbestos and PAH survey?
They help define the conditions for intervention prior to construction works and ensure the safety of personnel on site. They also determine whether reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) can be recycled.
Until the 1990s, asbestos was used in certain bituminous asphalt mixes to improve pavement durability and resistance.
When encapsulated within the infrastructure, the associated risk remains limited. However, milling, sawing, or coring operations may release hazardous fibres into the air. For this reason, asbestos and PAH surveys are mandatory before certain works on road infrastructures.
When is an asbestos and PAH survey mandatory?
When planning construction works, project owners, asset owners, and contractors must ensure that all stakeholders are informed about asbestos-related risks affecting land, engineering structures, and road networks. These stakeholders generally include municipalities, local road authorities, private motorway operators, and utility network companies.
In addition to roads, asbestos investigations must also be carried out on private and public car parks, heavy goods vehicle parking areas, airport and airfield runways, as well as port terminal surfaces. These areas must be assessed to ensure they are free from asbestos-containing materials, helping to protect the health and safety of all workers and users.
